Towing Capacity

The towing capacity of your Ram truck refers to the maximum weight you can pull, in addition to the cargo and passengers aboard. If you're not sure of the towing capacity for your specific model or configuration, use the following formula to calculate towing capacity:

Towing capacity = gross combined weight rating (GCWR) - curb weight - payload weight

Payload Capacity

Payload refers to the amount of weight you can add to your truck bed and cab, but does not include the trailer or the empty vehicle weight. Use the following formula to calculate how much your Ram truck can haul:

Payload capacity = gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) - curb weight

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

Gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR measures how much weight your truck can carry. This includes the weight of the vehicle, cargo, and passengers combined, but doesn't include the weight of a trailer.

Calculate a vehicle's GVWR with the following formula:

GVWR = curb weight + cargo weight + passenger weight

Gross Trailer Weight Rating (GTWR)

The gross trailer weight rating (GTWR) measures the total weight of your trailer, plus the cargo inside it.

Calculate GTWR with the following formula:

GTWR = trailer weight + trailer cargo

Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR)

The gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of your Ram truck is a crucial rating of the maximum allowable weight of your truck, trailer, and cargo combined. This is not an arbitrary number, as it shows you how much weight the mechanical components of your truck can safely handle.

Calculate GCWR using the following formula:

GCWR = GVWR + GTWR
